If you’re out of college, hopefully you’ve realized that, for the most part, you’ve outgrown the backpack. I’ve been using a mid-size duffle bag for a while now and it’s worked perfect; primarily because it’s a great size. The bag was only $68, so the quality might not be the highest, which could also explain why the zipper recently broke.
With that said, I’ve been on the search for a new bag and I thought I’d share some options I looked at, and also highlight the bag I’ve ended up with. And don’t let the photos make you think these bags don’t have great color – all the shots were taken with my iPhone.
I’m a big fan of most of the Jack Spade bags, but this shape of this one didn’t quite meet my needs given that I’ll be dumping clothes in it on occasion.
I like the shape of this Campomaggi bag, but didn’t want leather because bags often get wet when it rains in NYC.
Ever heard of Ro bags? I’ve not yet bought one of their bags, but imagine I will at some point. They have some cool styles, but this particular one is a bit briefcase’ish on the inside and the sections didn’t quite work for me. Nice bag though.
This Burberry bag was a pretty nice size – maybe a touch small for putting clothes in – but the price was insane. This bag retails for $998 or something like that. Burberry is an awesome brand, but I just don’t understand what about this bag makes it cost nearly $1,000.
This is the J.Crew bag I ended up with. Remember how I said i liked the shape of the 2nd bag in this post? This one is very similar, and not in leather.
It has great exterior pockets and a couple on the inside as well. I used it as an overnight bag last weekend while traveling to Florida (fit great in the overhead compartment on the plane), but I’ve also used it to carry my camera bag and a change of clothes to work.
This J.Crew bag is functional and stylish, and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a new bag. I’ve not been able to find it online, but they should have it at your local J.Crew store.
PS – yes, men can carry bags. Anyone that says otherwise probably owns a pair of Crocs.

Cool man, been looking for a solid bag for a while now. The Campomaggi & Ro bags are sweet’az. You’re right…guys CAN carry bags too! We got heaps of stuff to lug around now-a-days. Unless anyone has a better idea on how to carry all of my crap around…I’m all about a carry all bag.
I love bigger bags that have room for both business and pleasure. Even as a girl, I rarely carry small bags, unless I just want to. I have far too many things and I go so many places some days. You should get one of the girls to do a girls side big purse post.
I have a bag I picked up in Harajuku from a company called Hybrid. It’s a soft denim type material with alternating black and brown stripes and with brown suede accents. Even with the suede (which may actually be faux suede) it has one advantage over each of the bags you have described above, and above every bag I’ve used previously:
When it gets dirty, I can launder it by throwing it in the washing machine and putting in the dryer. It pops out good as new.
Your PS is perfect, haha. More men should carry bags, I hope your post will have some of them realize that. I like the bag you’ve chosen, big which means practical and stylish.

how much was the j-crew bag? i like the look. good choice. any other colors?
I really like the J-Crew bag! I myself love the Longchamp Le Pliage bookbags. They were functional and pretty in college and great for everyday usage as well 🙂 My current fav!

Congrats on being featured on IFB. Your post brought back memories of a red backpack I used for years, (oh, shame on me!) I didn’t have a car until I started snowboarding and got everywhere on my beautiful road bike. Hence the stupid red backpack. It really was ridiculous and the butt of many jokes. Light carbon footprint? What can I say?
