My guess is that most people that enjoy fashion also enjoy design, so hopefully today’s post is relevant to you.
We moved to a new apartment a couple weeks ago and are still putting the finishing touches on it and there’s two things I’d love your feedback on today: a chandelier and a media console.
Chandelier
Chandeliers are elegant, and in most cases, completely unexpected. Our kitchen table is made up of wood and a little iron, and I think a chandelier would provide a fantastic touch of feminine elegance. We don’t want to spend a gazillion dollars on lighting, so when I saw the two options below last night I was stoked about the price point. The first has a more traditional clear look, and the second still has the traditional look but is mostly white. Which of the two do you prefer (let me know in the comments).
I seem to be leaning towards the second option because it has a modern take on a traditional chandelier.
Media Console
The next item I’d love your take on is a media console – an item I generally dislike. Tossing the TV on the wall isn’t exactly an option due to how Manhattan buildings are constructed and I’m not interested in doing anything to the wall that will negatively impact our security deposit.
I was browsing around West Elm last night and stumbled on the Dumont Media Console. The mid-century modern feel would, like the chandelier, provide a nice contrast to other items in the room. Not to mention it has storage, which is something you can never have enough of in this city. Do you like it (let me know in the comments).
Thanks for your help on this little design project!
The media console is great, and will look good with either chandelier that you choose. I personally prefer the fist one, but it depends on what else you put in the room.
I would go for the second chandelier for the same reasons that you state. The console looks great.
Hey Ryan! The second chandelier looks fabulous and more modern than the first one! It also goes great with the media console! Good luck!
Hi! Love the chandelier’s. Just a word of caution, we found one similar online with a great price point and when it arrived the entire thing was in pieces and needed to be assembled. It took about 8 hours! It was crazy!
From your description, I prefer the second chandelier, but it is hard to pick a light fixture without seeing the table it is to be hung over. I would also recommend finding a secondhand one from craigslist or the ‘bay for a fraction of the price tag. Same with the media console – the piece is very nice, but great vintage Mid-century pieces also abound in a multitude of colors and fabrics. Like shopping for clothes, a little patience and searching will reap great rewards.
Hey Ryan! Glad the move is going so smoothly! Both chandeliers are awesome, but I think the second would look gorgeous over the table you mentioned, and with the media console being white you can carry on the colour scheme through the apartment. Hope that helps, Lorraine xxx
I love the second chandelier. It is PERFECT!
I’m also a big fan of the media console… So, yes. Go. Then take pictures of how fabulous the room looks.
I like the second chandelier. It’s elegant but the opaqueness makes it pretty modern (instead of the clear crystal – it’s quite stuffy). The media console works – I’m assuming your apartment has bright walls and light out the wazoo?
+1 on the 2nd chandelier. reminds me of the ones at the room service restaurant in HK. as for the media console, it looks a bit tall to me. you wanna make sure the tv will be comfortably at eye level when you’re on the couch. but otherwise- nice. i made the mistake of buying a dark one, so with the black tv set, it all looked a bit gloomy, lol.
Add me to the chorus of fans of fixture #2. Reminds me of opaline which is poised for a comeback. And the console is ideal as well. I see your exquisite taste extends to interiors. A new blog perhaps?
I don’t recommend white for your storage unit. While it could complement anything else in the room, it will show wear and damage more than anything else. And unless you want your furniture to have a burned out look, it’s not ideal. Whatever you buy, be sure it’s solid wood. Sonny D is right on with regards to the unit’s height.
As for the chandeliers, each is elegant and the white glass is more current. Both look somewhat dated and the white glass one looks more current. Last thing: chandeliers look best when installed on high ceilings. On lower ones they overwhelm a room. Ryan, you and your fiancee know what your space is.
Mad congrats to you both!
I would suggestion the crystal chandelier. I have one very similar and paid about $400 on ebay. I don’t feel you will tire of it because that style has been around forever. How fun to be decorating a new apartment!
